Overview
Overleaf Assistant is a Chrome extension that provides AI-powered writing assistance inside Overleaf. This policy explains what data the extension accesses, what is stored in our systems, how it is used, and your rights regarding that data.
Data We Access
With your explicit action only, the following data is accessed only when you actively use extension features:
Document content — the text of your Overleaf document
Text around your cursor — surrounding context for AI suggestions
Images you upload — for formula or content conversion
Your Google email address — used to create and identify your account
Overleaf project file names — to support file-aware features
Stored locally on your device
The following preferences are kept in Chrome's local storage and are never transmitted to our servers:
Your theme preference (light/dark mode)
Writing style profiles you create
Recently extracted concepts
Chat history (cleared when you sign out)
File categorization preferences
Data Stored on Our Servers
When you create an account, we store the following information in our database (hosted on Supabase):
Field Purpose User ID Unique identifier for your account Email address Account identification and communication Tokens allocated Your usage allowance under your current plan Tokens used Running total of AI processing consumed Plan Your subscription tier (e.g., free, paid) Plan start date When your current billing period began Account creation date When your account was first created Last updated date When your account record was last modified Stripe customer ID Links your account to Stripe for subscription management
This data is retained for as long as your account exists. You may request deletion at any time by contacting us.
How Your Data Is Handled
Document content and cursor text are sent to our secure server (Supabase), forwarded to Google's Gemini API for AI processing, and the result is returned to your browser. Document content is not stored on our server — it exists only in transit during active processing.
Images uploaded for formula conversion are sent to Google's Gemini API and are not stored.
Authentication uses Google OAuth. We receive only your email address, which is stored to manage your account and subscription.
Token usage is tracked server-side to enforce plan limits. Each AI request increments your usage counter; no record of the underlying content is retained.
Payments are processed entirely by Stripe. The extension never handles or stores your payment details. We store only the Stripe customer ID necessary to manage your subscription.
Data We Never Collect
Your browsing history
Content from websites other than Overleaf
Your Overleaf login credentials
Any data from pages visited outside Overleaf
Personal documents or files outside the Overleaf editor
The content of your AI prompts or responses — these are never logged or stored on our servers
